Honoring Active Aging Week 2015, September 27th– October 3rd.

Each day of active aging week has a corresponding theme, thus the “adventure book” has 7 Chapters, each devoted to a specific aspect of wellness in aging. Chapter details follow:

Chapter 1: Sunday – Foot Health

What is a healthy foot and how to keep your feet health up to par for your next adventure!

Chapter 2: MondayWalking

The WALK! With Aegis Therapies is a five day guided wellness program for anyone to participate in during active aging week. Featured activities support two dimensions of wellness each day; physical every day and promise to complete at least one of the following wellness additions:

  • Intellectual
  • Emotional
  • Spiritual
  • Occupational
  • Environmental
  • Social

Learn more about each of these additions by clicking on the “Walking” link above! You can also see my recent blog post-click link: “Boomers, Got Fit (bit)?

Chapter 3: TuesdayBe Social! (note: this day also includes optimal hearing and brain health!)

An excerpt from Active Aging Week’s website reads for Tuesday:

“Research shows that loneliness and social isolation are precursors for many serious health risks. Hearing loss often leads to loneliness and isolation. Helen Keller said,

“When you lose your vision, you lose contact with things. When you lose your hearing, you lose contact with people.”

This day also includes a mini-expo on communication and a card deck of activities designed to educate and inspire older adults with brain healthy living and hearing wellness.

Chapter 4: Wednesday – Water Therapy

“The best thing about aquatic fitness is that anyone can do it.” (Active Aging Week) You don’t have to know how to swim and you don’t even have to get your hair wet to participate in this day’s events.

My recommendations come from Professor Michael Pollan and Adelle Davis: “Eat food. Not too much. Mostly Plants.” (Michael Pollan). “Eat breakfast like a king, lunch like a prince, and dinner like a pauper.” (Adelle Davis)

Aging skin is more fragile and prone to infections thus poor skin health can degrade overall health. Use today as a day to think about your skin care regimen!

  1. Nice summary of why the 7 activities for Active Aging Week matter!

Hard to walk if your feet object. And we can’t emphasize enough how important social connections are to happiness, wellness and longevity. Nice close on the importance of healthy skin. Good case that the skin is the most ignored and abused organ. The skin is a big part of our defenses against disease.
